About Us

Under the leadership of Dr Austin Denby, Minister of Health, the Ministry of (MoH) is continuing its ambitious transformation of the health service in Sierra Leone to ensure that its people have accessible and equitable health care services across the country. MoH aims to grow the capacity and capability of the health sector workforce to meet the nation’s existing and future healthcare needs. Our approach is to improve the retraining and retention of the existing workforce and steadily increase the number of nurses and doctors in training in our teaching medical institutions.

What we do

These measures are being buttressed with a structured Diaspora Engagement Programme (DEP) to draw on the vast pool of Sierra Leonean professional healthcare talent in the diaspora. Some of these professionals are already contributing their time and expertise to the country on an ad hoc basis. The Diaspora Engagement Programme demonstrates MoH’s ambition to engage with diaspora health professionals more effectively and constructively through outreach and a support structure, thereby attracting them to provide their services in Sierra Leone.

The Diaspora Engagement Programme is underpinned by the National Health Sector Strategic Plan and aims to contribute to the strengthening of the health sector workforce.

The National Health Sector Strategic Plan 2021-2025 outlines the vision, mission and strategic objectives for transforming health for the people of Sierra Leone.

Building resilient and responsive health systems to provide and regulate comprehensive healthcare services in an equitable manner through innovative and appropriate technology and partnerships, while guaranteeing social and financial protections.
